One of the most trusted LASIK surgeons in the Southeast

As a world-class innovator in ophthalmology and ocular surgery, Dr. Young Choi offers some of the most cutting-edge corrective surgeries available to healthcare consumers including LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) and, more recently, its modern cousin SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction). It’s the combination of surgical skill and effective technology that make Dr. Choi a surgeon trusted by optometrists in Birmingham and throughout the country. If you’re considering ways to correct your vision, finding out more about LASIK eye surgery is a good starting point.

What Is LASIK?Life without glasses...

LASIK Defined
LASIK is the surgical reshaping of the cornea – the clear coating over the eyeball. Most vision problems, such a nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, are directly related to the shape of the cornea. Light enters the cornea, is focused by the lens and then hits the retina, so the image can be translated into nerve impulses that the brain can understand. When the cornea is mis-shaped, the light never properly focuses. LASIK surgery fixes that problem, so you can see clearly without corrective lens.
How is LASIK Done?
Dr. Choi makes creates a small flap in the outer coating of the eye. He then uses a state-of-the-art laser to remodel a key part of the cornea before closing the flap.

LASIK eye surgery has a 96 percent success rate, meaning you will notice an almost immediate improvement in your vision.
How Long is the Recovery Time with LASIK?

Healing is generally quick, but no two people report the same LASIK recovery time. It will take a couple weeks for the incision in the eye to heal completely, but that shouldn’t slow you down much. Dr. Choi will offer some post-operative guidelines to improve the healing process and you may want to rest the day of your procedure.

Is LASIK Safe?
There are risks with any surgical procedure like infection, but few problems associated with LASIK. Some people experience redness and dry eyes after the procedure temporarily. Ultimately, the success rate is very high for LASIK eye surgery and the risks low.
How Long Does LASIK Last?
LASIK is permanent vision correction for most people. The surgery, itself, takes about 30 minutes.
How Do I Know I’m a Good Candidate for LASIK?

It is up to Dr. Choi to decide if LASIK is the right choice for you, but this procedure is not right for everyone. For example, if you have extremely dry eyes or a chronic illness that affects healing like diabetes, Dr. Choi may recommend another vision solution for you.

Why choose Dr. Young Choi?

It is important to understand that LASIK is still surgery.  Therefore, it matters WHO your surgeon is.  This is even more important than the technology.  At the end of the day, it will be your surgeon who takes care of you and not some machine or some national chain.  Our motto: surgeon matters, technology matters, YOU matter.

Does Dr. Choi work with my eye doctor?

Yes.  Dr. Choi is trusted by over 100 optometrists across the state.  We have co-managed with an optometrist as far as Alaska.

Why is there such a difference in price?

The cost of LASIK surgery is basically based on surgeon and laser technology – more experience and newer lasers usually correlate with higher investment in your eye surgery.

LASIK vs SMILE What’s the difference?

What is the Difference Between LASIK and SMILE?
The SMILE procedure is a one-step process and there is no flap created like you see with LASIK. Instead, Dr. Choi uses a laser to make a lenticule, sort of like a bubble in the cornea, which is removed later on.
During your eye evaluation, Dr. Choi will explain more about your surgical options and decide which best suits your needs.
Which one is right for me?

It depends on your prescription and the thickness of your cornea.

Does SMILE replace LASIK?

No.  Both procedures have their role in refractive surgery.  By offering both LASIK and SMILE, it allows Dr. Choi to custom tailor your surgery.  Call for a free screening to find out which one is right for you.

I kept weighing the price of the surgery with the cost of my contact lenses and thought I was saving money. When I finally had laser correction surgery done I could see things I had never even noticed before. Not only did my vision improve but my life improved as well.

My only regret is that I wish I had done it sooner, I think of all
of these things I may have missed over the years.
