What is Blepharoplasty?
The eyes are a beautiful component of the face that deserves to be seen, but sometimes, an abundance of skin above or under the eyes can create an unflattering facial appearance or cause functional issues, like decreased peripheral vision. Board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Young H. Choi offers eyelid surgery (known as blepharoplasty) to lift and tighten the lower or upper eyelid, creating a younger and awakened facial appearance. Countless men and women in the Greater Birmingham area have eyelid surgery at Young H. Choi, M.D. Eye Surgery Center to reduce puffy bulges, leading to improved function and appearance. Whether upper or lower, eyelid surgery creates a more awakened appearance and can give you subtle yet striking improvements. If you are interested in refreshing your eyes with eyelid lift surgery, contact us to schedule a consultation with Dr. Choi in Vestavia Hills, AL.
"All went well and quite fast!"- L.H. / Google / Apr 20, 2021
"Wonderful people working and all very very nice. The doctor was great and I appreciated very much his prayer at the beginning of surgery. God bless each of them"- G.S. / Google / Apr 09, 2021
"Before going to see Dr. Choi it was extremely difficult and eventually dangerous for me to drive at night. I worked as a firefighter and first responder, so I needed my vision to be reliable. I went to other offices but was unable to get the care that I needed. I had glaucoma alleviation treatment and cataracts removed from both eyes with Dr. Choi. Thanks to Dr. Choi and his staff, I am now able to see without glasses and safely drive at night. Thank you, Lord Jesus Christ, for the talent skills and abilities of Dr. Choi and his staff."- D.B. / Office Visit / Mar 01, 2021
"Dr. Choi did my tri-focal lens replacement in mid-January and I am very happy. My wife and I are saving to have hers done there as well. Healing has been exactly what the Dr. stated it would be. I was a tad impatient on the front side expecting miracles immediately and failed to realize the body needs time to heal. I was super pumped since I wore glasses for 37 years (this includes most of my childhood). Thank you Dr. Choi for opening up a new and exiting world to me. I would also like to state all of the staff is nothing short of excellent. Thanks to everyone."- J.H. / Google / Feb 23, 2021
"In November I had surgery to remove cataracts, and also wished to be free of wearing glasses so my stigmatism and nearsightedness were corrected with new trifocal and trifocal Toric lenses. The results were life changing to say the least. It's wonderful to be able to read, watch tv, and track my golf ball all without having to wear glasses. I'm almost 73 and I believe my "new eyes" have indeed enhanced the quality of my life. I give Dr. Choi and his staff five stars and an excellent rating. Dr. Choi was warm, personable and genuinely seemed concerned about improving my vision. He, along with his staff were very professional yet welcoming and friendly at the same time. I also appreciate their detailed efforts to adhere to the Covid-19 safety guidelines. My dealings with Dr. Choi and staff was a wonderful experience to say the least."- R.C. / Office Visit / Jan 13, 2021
Ideal Candidates for Eyelid Surgery
Upper or lower blepharoplasty is a facial cosmetic enhancement that is popular among both women and men. During your private consultation, treatment options will be explained by Dr. Choi based on your conditions that need to be addressed. Most often, ideal candidates are impaired by excess, hanging skin and folds on the upper eyelid, or puffy skin just under the bottom eyelid, causing functional and vision difficulties that can get in the way of everyday activities. If you have excess, hanging skin on the upper eyelid, or bags and circles under the eyes, blepharoplasty can provide a softer, rejuvenated appearance.
How Is Blepharoplasty Performed?
Depending on the nature of the eyelid surgery, some form of anesthesia will be given. This surgery may be done on the top eyelid by itself, on the bottom eyelid, or a combination of both upper and lower.
Upper blepharoplasty assists in decreasing the hanging of skin that droops over the eye, producing a more appealing eyelid appearance. An incision is usually made along the natural crease to trim away loose skin and fatty tissue.
Lower eyelid surgery is performed to reduce puffy and bulging skin under the lower eyelid. In most cases, an incision is made just under the lash line to surgically remove fat, and the skin is delicately lifted to allow for a softer, flatter look. In some cases, a nonsurgical laser procedure may be performed to assist with discoloration.
What to Expect After Surgery
Blepharoplasty can take up to two hours, depending on whether both eyes or one is treated. After surgery, you should plan about a week to rest. A cold compress can help reduce discomfort, swelling, and bruising. The outcomes from blepharoplasty may last years, and while they are long-lasting, the aging process does not stop.
How Much Does Blepharoplasty Cost?
If hanging skin is compromising your vision, your insurance may cover some of your eyelid lift. Please talk to Dr. Choi during your consultation if you are considering applying for an insurance claim. A team member at Young H. Choi, M.D. Eye Surgery Center will help you get the needed paperwork and information to your provider to process your claim. Generally, you will need a diagnosis from an ophthalmologist that an eyelid lift is medically necessary to improve your vision.
If you are having a hard time seeing due to excess skin on your upper eyelids, or you suffer from puffy bags under your eyes, then blepharoplasty at Young H. Choi, M.D. Eye Surgery Center may be the answer for you. This surgery can help you look youthful and awakened while addressing your vision impairment concerns.
