Cataract Prevention: Healthy Foods that Promote Eye Health

Dr. Young H. Choi MD specializes in surgical solutions for common eye problems. From LASIK to cataract surgery, our office can help you keep your vision clear for years to come. Cataracts are one of the leading causes of vision impairment. They develop when eye proteins are damaged and make it harder to see.

There are many risk factors for cataracts, from age and gender to family history, but there are also behavioral changes that can help reduce your risk. If you're interested in preventative eye care, one way you can try to reduce your chances of developing cataracts is by changing your diet. Certain foods, especially ones high in vitamins C and E, can help. Here are some suggestions.

Orange Juice

This popular drink is rich in vitamin C. Increasing the level of vitamin C in your diet can help reduce your risk of developing cataracts, so starting some of your mornings with a glass of orange juice might be a great way to keep your eyes healthy. Naturally, eating oranges is also a great way to get the nutrients that you need.

Eggs

Another staple of the breakfast table, egg yolks are full of nutrients that can protect your eyes against the rays of the sun. They are high in lutein, a type of carotenoid that helps fight macular degeneration, the leading cause of legal blindness.

Green Tea

Green tea contains antioxidants that could help protect the eyes from certain eye problems, like glaucoma and cataracts. In one study, tea cut the risk of cataracts in half for mice. Switching out your typical hot beverage for a green tea could prove beneficial in the long haul.

Walnuts

Walnuts are packed with antioxidants and vitamin E. They also contain proteins and omega-3 fatty acids that can help protect your sight. Make these a regular lunchtime snack and you'll be well on your way to healthier eyes.

Salmon

If you're going to have fish for dinner, consider going for the salmon. Like walnuts, salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids. It also contains astaxanthin, which can protect the eyes from damage. It can even help slow down or prevent the formation of cataracts. One study showed that women who ate fish three times per week could reduce their risk of developing cataracts by more than 10 percent.

Carrots

Carrots are filled with nutrients that can protect your sight. Lutein, for example, can help prevent damage from some of the ultraviolet light given off from the sun. Many other yellow and orange fruits or vegetables also contain beneficial nutrients for your eyes.

Avocados

Opting for the guacamole next time you go out to eat is a good idea if you're worried about preventing cataracts. Avocados are full of nutrients and vitamins that can help protect your vision. They contain vitamin B6, vitamin E, and other stuff that can help you prevent cataracts.

Broccoli

Broccoli also contains lutein. It also offers zeaxanthin. Both of these nutrients can reduce inflammation and even prevent “free radicals” from damaging your eyesight. Other green veggies, like spinach, also contain nutrients like lutein that can improve your eye health.
